INTRODUCING THE PERIOD OR QUARTER SYSTEM
Swedish flag

Swedish universities work on a Quarter System - in which the semester is broken into two, or a Period System - in which it is split into four parts. Rather than taking all of your courses at the same time, you will take them consecutively – one after another, in short intense bursts. You should aim to take two courses per Quarter or one course per Period. You’ll do exactly the same amount of work per course as you would if you were to study your courses continuously throughout the semester, but you’ll do it in a much more concentrated way.

Because you’ll be studying in this intensive manner, it is very important that you don’t overburden yourself in any one Period or Quarter. It might seem quite tempting to take 2 courses in 1 Period and have another Period free for exploring, but if you do this, you will find that you cannot cope with the workload.

You won’t have to wait until the end of the semester to be examined, as you would here, instead exams will occur at the end of each Quarter or Period.
